Williston Vermont

The Basics

Williston is one of the fastest developing towns in the State, with a current population of about 8,700 and climbing. Its proximity to Interstate 89, and the neighboring towns of BurlingtonEssexRichmond, and Hinesburg, make it an easy stop for shopping, dining, and entertainment. Just minutes from the Burlington International Airport, and Downtown Burlington, it is an easy choice of location for several major retailers, including Toys R’Us, Home Depot, Walmart, Best Buy, Staples, Marshalls and many more. You’ll find a plethora of smaller independent retailers and restaurants as well. A few favorites include Chef’s Corner Café and Bakery for an inspired eat-in breakfast, lunch, or brunch, wonderful catering services, and scrumptious International desserts, and the Purple Sage Salon for its pleasant atmosphere and talented stylists. Every amenity is covered in Williston.

Although a hub for corporate retailers, residents of Williston know of the pleasantly dichotomous small town feel of the Town Center, just two miles south on Route 2. The Town Center hosts the Town Offices, the Dorothy Alling Memorial Library, recreational areas including the Williston Community Park, and Williston Central School, all quite removed from the commotion of Taft Corners.

Schools

Allen Brook School on Talcott Road serves grades Pre-K-2, and Williston Central School on Central Drive in Williston proper, services grades 3–8. The Williston school district is part of the Chittenden South Supervisory Union. Students in grades 9-12 attend Champlain Valley Union High School, located in Hinesburg Vermont, which also educates resident students from Hinesburg, Charlotte, Shelburne, and St. George.

On the Landscape

Williston, VTThe (burlington) Community Park is a well-equipped playground for adults and children alike, offering 4 ball fields, sand volleyball courts, a lighted outdoor basketball court, horseshoe pits, and a skating rink. Of course, a playground for toddlers and school age children is a hit. With the Village Bike Path running through it, and parking available, it is a popular destination for recreation.

Several other recreational areas are well-utilized by Williston residents:  Rossignol Park offers tennis and basketball courts, Brennan Park and Community Garden has three little league fields and the site of the Williston Community Gardens, abundant trails are accessible from the Sucker Brook Hollow Country Park, Mud Pond Conservation Area and Country Park, Five Tree Hill Country Park, Allen Brook Nature Trail, the Brownell Mountain Conservation Area, the popular Lake Iroquois Recreation Area and of course the Catamount Outdoor Family Center. A complete list of recreational areas may be found on the Town’s website.

Maple Sugaring, Williston, VTLake Iroquois is a 229-acre reservoir bordered by the towns of Williston, Hinesburg, Richmond, and St. George. It was formerly known as Hinesburg pond, originally created in the mid-1800s to supply local mills with a stronger water supply. A dam built on Pond Brook caused the spring-fed pond to rise above its banks and become the current lake. Swimming, boating, fishing, picnicking, and hiking make this a wonderful seasonal spot for locals and visitors alike. Season passes and day permits are available in Town Clerk offices in the communities it borders.

The Catamount Outdoor Family Center is a 500-acre Recreation/Conservation property encouraged for public use – a local hot spot and a great destination for tourists with overnight options. The Bed & Breakfast was built in 1796 by the first governor of Vermont, Thomas Chittenden, and offers refined accommodations for friends and family. With 35 kilometers of professionally designed trails, visitors will enjoy bird watching to “cyclocross”, snowshoeing to “fat biking” – there is an array of recreational activities year-round from the mild to the more extreme. With camps and clinics, events, and season passes available, you’ll be covered at Catamount.

Williston Golf Club is set in an easy location at the heart of Historic Williston Village. With a non-conformist parkland style layout, it was built using the natural features of the land, demanding strategic play. In its 4th generation of ownership, this well-maintained course is one of VT’s best 4-hour rounds. The club is public to all, with year-round memberships or daily affordable rates, and kids play free!

Of Special Note

Although shopping extends far beyond the extents of Maple Tree Place, it is an ideal plaza-style collection of big brands and boutique shops, easily accessible from Interstate 89, and all Towns surrounding. From the Plaza’s square, you’ll find dining (Belle’s Café is a lunch favorite, and of course, your evening entertainment might include the newer and popular McGillicuddy’s Irish Ale House or Mexicali Grill & Cantina), movies (the Majestic 10 Cinemas is a regular destination), a plethora of shopping, services, and seasonal entertainment on the green including the Maple Tree Place Summer Concert Series.
